A Beginner's Guide to Bespoke Packaging: Terminology Explained

If you're new to bespoke packaging, some of the terminology can seem a little overwhelming at first. From dielines and corrugated board to foil blocking and fulfilment, the packaging industry has its own language. The good news? Most packaging terms are far simpler than they sound.

Whether you're launching a new product, refreshing your branding or exploring custom packaging for the first time, understanding a few key terms can help you make more informed decisions and get the most from your packaging investment.

What Is Bespoke Packaging?

Let's start with the basics.

Bespoke packaging refers to packaging that has been specifically designed and produced to meet the unique requirements of a product or brand. Unlike stock packaging, bespoke solutions are tailored in terms of their size, structure, materials, print and finish.

The result is packaging that not only protects your products but also reinforces your brand identity and enhances the customer experience.

Understanding Dielines

A dieline is the technical blueprint for a packaging product.

It shows where the packaging will be cut, folded and assembled, along with any areas reserved for artwork and branding. Before production begins, designers place artwork onto the dieline to ensure everything appears correctly on the finished packaging.

Think of it as the foundation of any successful packaging design.

What Is Corrugated Packaging?

Corrugated board is one of the most commonly used materials in bespoke packaging.

Made up of multiple layers of paperboard, including a fluted inner layer, it provides strength and protection while remaining lightweight. Corrugated packaging is widely used for e-commerce boxes, transit packaging and retail-ready solutions.

You may hear references to different flute types, such as E Flute, B Flute or Double Wall, each offering different levels of strength, print quality and protection.

MOQ Explained

MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity.

This is the smallest quantity of packaging that can be produced in a manufacturing run. MOQs vary depending on the packaging style, materials and print requirements.

Understanding MOQs early in a project can help businesses manage budgets, inventory and future growth plans more effectively.

CMYK and Pantone Printing

When creating branded packaging, colour accuracy matters.

CMYK printing uses four colours—Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black—to reproduce a wide range of designs and images. It's ideal for full-colour artwork and photographic prints.

Pantone colours, meanwhile, are pre-mixed inks used to achieve precise and consistent brand colours. This is often the preferred option for businesses with strict brand guidelines.

Packaging Finishes

Finishing touches can have a significant impact on how packaging looks and feels.

Lamination

A protective film applied to printed packaging, available in finishes such as matt, gloss and soft-touch.

Foil Blocking

A process that applies metallic or coloured foil to selected areas of a design, creating a premium appearance.

Embossing and Debossing

Embossing raises a design above the surface.

Debossing presses a design into the material.

Both techniques add texture and help key design elements stand out.

Sustainable Packaging Terms

Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for businesses and consumers alike. Some key terms to know include:

  • Recyclable Packaging – Packaging that can be collected and processed into new materials.
  • Recycled Content – Packaging made using previously recovered materials.
  • FSC® Certification – Materials sourced from responsibly managed forests.
  • Plastic-Free Packaging – Packaging designed without plastic components, often using paper-based alternatives.

What Does Fulfilment Mean?

Fulfilment refers to the process of storing, packing and shipping products to customers.

Packaging plays an important role in fulfilment efficiency. Well-designed packaging can reduce packing times, improve protection during transit and create a better unboxing experience for customers.

Why Understanding Packaging Terminology Matters

You don't need to become a packaging expert to create effective, high-performing packaging. However, understanding common terminology can make conversations with suppliers, designers and manufacturers far more productive.

At Novapac, we help businesses develop bespoke packaging solutions that balance functionality, brand impact and sustainability. Whether you're creating luxury retail packaging, e-commerce boxes or fully customised packaging concepts, understanding the basics is the first step towards a successful project.

After all, great packaging is about more than protecting a product—it's about creating a lasting impression from the moment it's received.
